Why Use ANYTHING other than Silver Amalgams or Glass Ionomers?
Sometimes a restoration requires a stronger (yet unfortunately less decay resistant) bond afforded by strictly resin or composite resin materials.
Additionally, the composite resin materials polish to a higher shine and are smoother than Glass Ionomers.
Composite resins and resin cements absolutely have their place in dentistry under the correct circumstances, and are considered a "clinically acceptable" modality.
All things considered, we at Dr. Magnotta and Associates, DDS, FICOI always strive to use the appropriate material to match the goals of our patients considering their desires including longevity, esthetics, and durability.

Many things over the years have improved the way dental hygiene care is provided.
Power scalers, air polishers, loupes and lights.
The O'Hehir curettes should be counted as well, of course.
But to me, xylitol is a bigger game changer than all the other improvements.
Xylitol will change our approach to prevention and our success.
Despite all the time we spend removing calculus and treating gingivitis and periodontitis, our primary focus from the start has been prevention.
It's easy to lose that focus and instead spend more time scaling and root planing.

Smoking is horrible for the gums as it causes the bone underneath to retreat, it causes oral and pharyngeal cancer among other serious cancers!
It has also been shown to contribute to cavities!
Chewing tobacco and other forms of smokeless tobacco cause tooth decay.
That's because chewing tobacco contains high amounts of sugar, which contributes to cavities.
Chewing tobacco also contains coarse particles that can irritate your gums and scratch away at the enamel on your teeth, making your teeth more vulnerable to cavities.

Sometimes performing a Root Canal in an attempt to "save" a tooth may not be the best option.
Tooth replaced by implant, abutment, and crown.
The patient was amazed that, "it looks and feels so good, I can't tell that it's not real!"
