He got a degree in studio art with a focus on glass and ceramics.
After receiving a Masters of Education from the University of Louisville in 1999, he went on to teach art for six years in the Jefferson County Public School system.
It was while watching an episode of "Extreme Makeover" that Dr. Watkins first made the connection between dentistry and art.
He realized the importance of a beautiful smile and what a difference a person's teeth and gums can make in their appearance.
