If a tooth is damaged to the point that over half the tooth will be filling material, the tooth may require a crown to reliably restore its function.
The purpose of a crown is to cover what is left of the tooth, protecting it from further damage.
Sometimes, teeth with small fillings, or no fillings at all will develop fractures that cause sensitivity to biting or cold.
In order to keep the fractures from getting deeper a crown may be necessary in these cases as well.
Crowns are almost always required on teeth that have had root canals as well.

At McKay's Mill Dental, it's our mission to ensure the healthiest teeth possible, and that may include restorative dental services, such as crowns.
A crown is a cap placed over a tooth to cover and protect it.
Dental crowns have undergone many changes since their inception.
In the past, materials such as metal and gold were the strongest options available, but they obviously left a lot to be desired when considering esthetics and better options are available today.
Porcelain fused to metal crowns have been the standard for many years now and are still the appropriate choice in some situations.

Fillings repair and restore the health and function of teeth that have cavities, which is tooth decay caused when plaque and acid have worn away the tooth's protective outer enamel.
Fillings restore teeth to normal shape and function, and Dr. Matt Avrit, your dentist in Franklin, only utilizes tooth colored fillings as his material of choice.
Tooth colored fillings do not contain hazardous components such as mercury, and when used appropriately, it has superior characteristics when considering esthetics, cost and its ability to chemically bond to tooth structure.
