While in pursuit of his undergraduate education, Rick spent 6 years, mostly the warmer months, traveling to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, an Aleutian island 800 miles out, in the Bering Sea to work construction.
You may have seen the the reality tv show "The Deadliest Catch".
It is largely filmed in and around Dutch Harbor.
It was during his time in the Navy that Dr. Franklin sparked his desire to travel.
He enlisted immediately after graduation from Pryor High School and served four years in the Submarine Service as a Machinist Mate, where he received the National Defense Service Medal for service during national emergency (war time).
