It is common for a child's first tooth to erupt at around 6 months old, while this is very early for a professional cleaning it is still important to clean them at home.
Because children are just learning how to take care of their teeth, they don't normally clean them properly so it is more common for decay and cavities to occur.
Children's dentistry is different from regular dentistry because each baby tooth has a completely different tooth structure and anatomy than an adult, permanent tooth.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) suggests that parents should make an initial "well-baby" appointment with a dentist approximately six months after the emergence of the first tooth, or no later than the child's first birthday.
Although this may seem surprisingly early, the incidence of infant and toddler tooth decay has been rising in recent years.
Tooth decay and early cavities can be exceptionally painful if they are not attended to immediately, and can also set the scene for poor oral health in later childhood.
