Q: What home care regimen do you recommend to maintain healthy teeth in between check-ups?.
A: For dental health between visits, it is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once and make sure to use toothpaste that contains fluoride.
We also highly recommend the Sonicare ultrasonic toothbrush for the very best results.
Avoid foods that are high in sugar, like candy or sticky treats.
Bacteria in your mouth metabolize the sugar you eat and create acid.
This acid is the cause of cavities or decay.
At Dr. Baucum DDS, we believe the first step in keeping your smile beautiful is to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy.
We offer comprehensive new patient exams, as well as routine exams at cleaning appointments.
We recommend having your teeth cleaned at least every 6 months.
Your initial oral examination includes a visual examination, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
We will also take x-rays, which includes the panoramic x-ray for proper diagnosis of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth as well as the bite-wing x-ray series for proper diagnosis of proximal decay of posterior teeth.
Similar in color and texture to natural teeth, tooth-colored fillings are less noticeable, and much more attractive, than other types of fillings.
Tooth-colored fillings are made from durable plastics called composite resins.
Since they are tooth-colored and match the shade of your natural teeth, they look more natural than other filling materials does.
You'll be able to smile, talk, and eat with confidence.
Composite fillings are typically administered in one appointment.
The affected tooth is numbed, cleaned, and prepared for the filling material.
Crowns are a type of dental restoration which, when cemented into place, fully cup over the portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
In comparison, fillings are dental restorations that fill in or cover over just a portion of a tooth.
Since dental crowns encase the entire visible aspect of a tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooth's new outer surface.
Crowns can be made out of porcelain (meaning some sort of dental ceramic), metal (a gold or other metal alloy), or a combination of both.
A fixed dental bridge is a non-removable appliance often used to replace missing teeth.
The traditional bridge is usually made of porcelain fused to metal.
It consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth and are attached to artificial teeth, filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth.
At least two appointments are usually necessary for a bridge procedure.
During the first visit, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow space for the crown.
