We provide orthodontic treatment for children and adults focusing on providing healthy and beautiful smiles. Our practice locations are in Marblehead and Quincy Market in Boston, MA. Our patients range from young children (intercepting early dental development problems) to grandparents (realigning and correcting tooth positions for cosmetic or restorative purposes) and everyone in between.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by an orthodontist as they approach the age of 7. Early detection of a potential or existing dento-facial developmental problem is always beneficial for a child. Services
Dr. Cognata has over 25 years of experience in private practice providing orthodontic care for children and adults with the full spectrum of malocclusions and dentofacial problems.
He also spent 25 years teaching part time at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Department of Orthodontics where he was Director of Predoctoral Orthodontics and Clinical Instructor of Postdoctoral Orthodontics.
He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, Northeastern Society of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Society, a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and Secretary of the Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics.
It is always our goal to make your experience with us a pleasant one while providing you or your child with excellent orthodontic treatment.
For your first visit to our practice, we have reserved special time for you to meet the doctor and the office team.
The doctor will do a thorough clinical examination and then meet with you to describe the nature of the malocclusion, discuss treatment options and approximate treatment time.
We plan to answer all of your questions pertaining to your personal orthodontic needs or those of your child.
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has undergone additional years of training after becoming a dentist.
Upon completion of orthodontic training in the Harvard Postdoctoral Orthodontic Residency, Dr. Cognata has limited his practice to the specialty of orthodontics.
He has many years of experience both in private practice and teaching Harvard Dental pre and postdoctoral residents in the treatment of child and adult orthodontic malocclusions, and dentofacial developmental problems.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends an orthodontic screening for children by the age of 7 years.
Orthodontic treatment lengths vary by individual.
Some minor treatments can be accomplished in a few months while the treatment of more severe malocclusion can require two or more years.
We do know for sure that patients can and do influence the treatment time and outcome.
Excellent cooperation including good oral hygiene and home care, avoidance of damaging hard and sticky foods and candy, regular wear of removable appliances when indicated and keeping regular appointments so that we can do what is necessary to make progress, all affect the time required to complete your orthodontic treatment.
Brackets are the "Braces" or small attachments that are bonded directly to the tooth surface.
The brackets are the part of your braces to which the orthodontist or assistant attaches the arch wire.
At some time during treatment, it may be necessary to wear elastics to coordinate the upper and lower teeth and perfect the bite.
Once teeth begin to move in response to elastics, they move rapidly and comfortably.
If elastics (rubber bands) are worn intermittently, they will continually "shock" the teeth and cause more soreness.
