A diagnostic exam lays the foundation of all future treatments and recommendations.
It involves an in-depth examination of the patient's teeth, gums, jaw and muscles.
A comprehensive diagnostic exam isn't just regular teeth cleaning or evaluation, but involves an overall view of the health of your mouth and jaw.
According to the American Dental Association an oral exam is defined as: the extensive analysis and recording of all extraoral, intraoral and soft tissues.
Comprehensive oral exams are not only beneficial for oral health but are advantageous for your body's overall health as well.
According to a report by the CDC in 2012, approximately 65 million Americans are affected by gum disease annually.
Gums play a vital role in supporting our teeth and the bone tissue underneath.
When gums are healthy, they're of a light pink hue.
To maintain healthy gums, dentists recommend brushing the teeth at least twice and flossing once a day.
While the human mouth is home to over a million bacteria-the problem occurs when it accumulates on the teeth under a substance called plaque.
When plaque gets excessive, the body fights this accumulation of bacteria.
Tooth decay and cavities are one of the most common oral health problems.
Cavities are decayed areas of the teeth that lead to tiny holes or openings.
Caries or tooth decay are caused by various factors, such as excessive use of sugary foods and drinks, accumulation of bacteria in the mouth and unsatisfactory oral hygiene.
Leaving cavities on their own can result in infection in deeper parts of the tooth, severe toothache and even tooth loss.
Regular dental cleaning and good oral care regime can prevent cavities and tooth decay.
