Growing up in West Tennessee, Dr. Mark graduated from White Station High School in Memphis, TN before moving to Murfreesboro, TN to earn his pre-dental degree from Middle Tennessee State University.
While in Murfreesboro, he met and married his wife of 11 years, Kristy.
Following graduation from MTSU they moved to Memphis so Dr. Mark could attend the University of Tennessee, College of Dentistry, to complete his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 2005.
After their first son was born they moved back to middle Tennessee where Dr. Mark worked as a general dentist in Shelbyville.

In 1970, he expanded his practice and became the first orthodontist to establish a permanent practice in the nearby town of Maryville, TN.
Dr. Bowles' son, Dr. Ryan G. Bowles, joined his father in practice in 2005 before taking over Bowles Orthodontic Specialists in 2009.
They both continued to practice together until Dr. Ryan decided to leave orthodontics and pursue humanitarian work overseas.
In 2011, Dr. Mark J. Owens acquired the orthodontic practice from Dr. Ryan Bowles, allowing Ryan and his family to relocate to the Middle East to pursue work in humanitarianism.
