Maintaining your oral health is an important component of your overall health.
There has been a lot of research linking oral disease to a number of other diseases including cardiac disease and diabetes.
Your first step is to have regular checkups.
The ADA recommends cleanings every 6 months if you've never had gum problems or more frequently depending on your specific oral disease risk.
X-rays: A full mouth series of 18 xrays unless this was done in the past five years.
If a current FMX is available then only 4 xrays of the posterior teeth will be taken and any other necessary to properly diagnose and treatment plan.

Show areas of decay that your dentist may not be able to see with just a visual examination, such as tiny pits of decay that might occur between teeth or decay that is developing underneath an existing filling or crown.
Help your dentist plan, prepare and place tooth implants, orthodontic treatments, dentures or other dental work.
Reveal other abnormalities such as cysts, cancer and changes associated with metabolic and systemic diseases (such as Paget's disease and lymphoma).
For children, radiographs are used to watch for decay and to monitor tooth growth and development.

Silver-colored fillings or dental amalgams are known to contain approximately 50% mercury.
Mercury is continuously emitted from these filling materials and even intensified by chewing, grinding, or brushing your teeth!
The mercury is then absorbed and retained by the body and can lead to a number of health risks.
It is for those reasons that our office chooses to place the newer "tooth colored" or resin fillings.
Not only are they more esthetic, they continue to improve in laboratory studies are said to last longer and are stronger than older types of fillings.

Crowns or caps are used to completely cover a tooth after a fracture or root canal.
Often times a tooth with a large filling is weakened after years of use and can crack causing pain upon chewing or loss of a significant amount of tooth structure.
In order to save the tooth, it will be reduced by approximately 2mm on all sides, enough so a new porcelain crown can be placed over without altering the existing bite.
An impression will be made and a temporary crown will be placed and worn for 3 weeks while the lab manufactures the permanent crown.
