Periodontal disease, which is also known as "gum disease" (also known as Pyrea/Pyorrhea) is a major cause of tooth loss that can cause a multitude of serious health conditions if left untreated.
Periodontal disease is caused by plaque buildup that remains on teeth for an extended period of time.
As the bacteria remain on the teeth, gums and underneath the gums, the body's natural defense mechanisms are unable to ward off the offender and will subsequently self destruct.
This could result in gums that have a red, swollen appearance, gums that bleed easily and can contribute to receding gums, bone loss and ultimately loosing one or more teeth.
