Good dental hygiene is essential for both your oral health and a healthy appearance.
While your own regular tooth brushing removes most food particles from your teeth, over time, plaque and even tartar can build up, especially in difficult to brush locations.
Dental prophylaxis is the specialized teeth cleaning treatment designed to remove the plaque and tartar that build up on your teeth.
Using specialized dental equipment, our hygienist performs a prophylaxis treatment to remove these stubborn substances both above and below the gum line.
If a tooth becomes permanently damaged by decay or trauma, a filling will be required to restore the function of the tooth.
Unfortunately, the most common damage is tooth decay, caused by acids produced by bacteria that are always present in the mouth.
Given enough time, these acids will dissolve the enamel layer that protects your tooth, causing a cavity.
A cavity is permanent damage to a tooth that does not heal by itself and, without treatment, will only become worse.
As the acids penetrate further into the tooth, the potential for pain, infection, and loss of the tooth increase.
A crown is an artificial tooth, made of ceramic or gold, that covers a damaged tooth.
Crowns are used to cover a tooth that has had a root canal or a fracture, or to restore a tooth that would require too large a filling.
When ceramic is used, the color of the crown can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.
A crown will be an improvement in function and appearance over the original, damaged tooth.
While a crown is used to replace a single tooth, bridges are used to replace multiple missing teeth, filling gaps between existing teeth.
A denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth.
Similar to dentures, partial dentures are made to fill in the spaces when some natural teeth remain.
Benefits to wearing dentures include improving your ability to chew, your appearance, and even your speech.
A full set of teeth are needed to fully chew food, and being able to do so can improve digestion and certainly the enjoyment of food.
Dentures can also restore a full, healthy smile and support sagging facial muscles.
And while it may take practice, many denture wearers are better able to articulate their speech after receiving dentures.
